story of the rescue van

from a special akita athena...a letter to b.e.a.r: on august 16, 2013, i will celebrate my 12th birthday. over the years, i have experienced many things. my early years were filled with difficult times and harsh places. my later years have brought me peace, calm, and true love. the world of rescue saved me from the worst of my hard life. the wonderful people in rescue made sure that i had good food and walks every day, but i still spent a lot of time in a cage. lucky for me, i was even able to stay in touch with my 2 brothers. over time, as i got more gray and the years passed, i found my chances for adoption getting slimmer. every time a new family came by, i was passed over for a younger version of myself. in time, i just assumed my destiny was to live out the rest of my days with rescue, in my cage. funny how life is. you see, things all changed in january 2010. on a bitterly cold, slippery saturday morning, my "rescue mom", jo, brought a potential new "mom" to the kennel where i was staying. she wanted to adopt an akita. after seeing three different males, (including one of my brothers), jo asked the prospective new "mom" if she would take a look at just one more akita. lucky for me she said, "yes!". well the rest is history! i have spent the past 3 1/2 years living quietly and comfortably. i have experienced grass under my paws, treats, a soft bed; and did i mention treats? i have learned about compassion, trust, and loyalty, and about love. so, a few months ago as i was relaxing under my favorite tree, i decided it was necessary to give back to the people and organization that never stops believing i deserved a better life, jo and matt dimon. they really love and understand akitas. through their organization bear (big east akita rescue of toms river, nj), they have brought together people and akitas that never would have met. not even the devastating super storm sandy kept them from their on going mission of saving and finding forever homes for as many of us as possible. so jo, matt, and all of the bear volunteers, please keep on doing what you do best, placing displaced akitas into the right homes. you mend broken hearts, keep hope alive, and bring awareness to our plight. in the process you not only heal us akita's, you heal humans too (just ask my rescue mom). i wanted to contribute in a lasting way, something to help you do your important work. i don't know what all of us would do without you, so on behalf of every akita you have touched, please accept my gift. i'll be with you every mile!

since i'm an akita, i needed a little help to make this dream a reality. i want to thank everyone who assisted me. some of them didn't even know what i was up to! i want to give arizona dimon a special "shout out" for putting me in touch with matt so i could bring everyone together. i couldn't have done any of this without matt, the "inside man". you were instrumental in coordinating the people & paperwork (and kept my surprise a secret). i can't thank you enough. a giant "thank you" to dave borden of haldeman nissan in hamilton square, nj, and darlene, owner of cranbury custom lettering, in mercerville, nj for their contributions and those of their companies'. you two helped me get the perfect van, and then made it look amazing! also to diane lynch for the logo design. all of you played a huge part in this and you all rock! keep on truckin' jo & matt!

love,

athena — with a hero.
